VIVA Energy Australia has named Thys Heyns as its new general manager of refining.
Viva Energy chief executive Scott Wyatt said Mr Heyns’ brought a wealth of local and international leadership experience to the role, gained from his previous refining, supply and trading roles.
“Viva Energy is extremely pleased to welcome Thys to Australia’s newest energy company and we believe he has the right experience to help us create a sustainable manufacturing business,” Mr Wyatt said.
“Thys has spent more than 27-years in the industry, including leadership roles in both Australian and international refineries.
“Given his impressive credentials we are excited that he has joined us and know that he is well poised to lead Geelong Refinery into the future,” he said.
Mr Wyatt also thanked Guy Hackwell, for stepping into the role prior to Mr Heyns’ appointment, and for leading the Geelong team through the transition from Shell to Viva Energy.
Before joining Viva Energy, Thys was the business unit leader (general manager) at BP’s Rotterdam refinery in the Netherlands for five years, Viva said in a statement.
Previous to that he held the role of general manager at the BP Kwinana refinery in Western Australia between 2005 and 2010, the company said.
Mr Heyns said he was thrilled to join the refinery team and is looking forward to establishing his home in Geelong.
“The Viva Energy opportunity presented itself at the right time. It is a business that I am passionate about and where I believe I am in a position to add value,” he said.
