SANTOS has confirmed the success of a well drilled by Quadrant Energy in permit area WA 214 P, about 12 kilometres from the John Brookes platform in the Carnarvon basin.
Located in the Outer Barrow region, the Davis 1 well hit gas in the Maitland sandstone before being plugged and abandoned.
The well was spudded in the fourth quarter of 2015, Santos said in its first quarter report.
Quadrant plans to develop the gas condensate reserves of WA 214 P and five neighbouring permits in the Outer Barrow through the drilling of exploration and appraisal wells.
The company plans to drill four more exploration wells in 2016, having earlier estimated up to a maximum of 10 wells may be drilled within the North West Shelf permits over the next five years.
Santos holds a 45 per cent stake in WA 214 P and has a minority stake in three of the other five permits Quadrant will be targeting.
The company’s production levels from the Carnarvon basin were lower in the first quarter, with gas production down 8% and condensate down 11% than the previous corresponding quarter due to lower domestic gas nominations, while oil production was also lower due to natural field decline.
