Peter Botten is a worthy recipient of this year’s John Doran Lifetime Achievement Award.

PNG legend, Oil Search managing director Peter Botten, has achieved more international recognition for his key role in driving the country’s oil and gas sector to its strong global position with the recent handing down of the prestigious John Doran Lifetime Achievement Award at the Good Oil Conference in Perth.

Mr Botten, who already holds a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) ranking, was recognised in this case for his outstanding leadership with more than 20 years at the helm of Oil Search.

The award judges noted that since becoming managing director of Oil Search in 1994 the company has grown substantially from a market capitalisation of around $200 millon to its current position over $10 billion.

He was also a critical driver behind the development of the PNG LNG project and has played a key role in current plans to bring the Papua LNG and PNG LNG projects together.

Under his direction Oil Search is now one of the major players in the Papua New Guinea participating in all of PNG’s producing oil and gas assets while also building a 29% stake in the globally significant PNG LNG Project.

“Peter has one of the most outstanding records as an Australian oil and gas executive and is thoroughly deserving of the John Doran Award,” Good Oil Conference organiser and Vertical Events managing director, Stewart McDonald, said.

“He is an industry stalwart, serving one of the ASX’s longest tenures as a managing director. In that time, he has generated fantastic returns for shareholders, building the Oil Search brand into one of the most respected names in the country.

“One of the major factors recognised by the judging panel was Peter’s philanthropic work,” McDonald said.

In addition to his work with Oil Search, Mr Botten serves as chairman for the Australian charity, Business for Millennium Development, as well as the Oil Search Health Foundation, which promotes major health programmes throughout Papua New Guinea

The John Doran Lifetime Achievement Award is named in memory of the founder of Roc Oil Ltd.

The late Dr John Doran was involved in numerous petroleum discoveries and is credited with finding WA’s Thevenard Island field and PNG’s SE Gobe oil field.
