THE FIRST of two new production wells drilled as part of the BassGas mid life enhancement (MHE) project, Yolla 5, was spudded on 14 March, project operator Origin Energy has announced.

Drilled by the West Telesto rig, the well is expected to reach a measured depth below rotary table of about 3,280 metres.

The wells are designed to extend production from the Yolla field through to the BassGas production facility at Lang Lang, in Victoria.

The two-well drilling program follows the successful lift of the export compression and condensate pumping units into place on the Yolla platform late last year.

Origin chief executive for upstream Paul Zealand said the spudding of the wells was the culmination of years of planning.

“Completion of the MLE project will extend the production life of BassGas, to continue to meet the growing demand for gas on Australia’s east coast,” he said.

Origin is operator of the BassGas joint venture with a 42.5 per cent stake, with AWE (35%), Prize Petroleum International (11.25%) and Toyota Tsusho Gas E&P Trefoil (11.25%) also holding stakes.
